Blind Date Ends With Hug, Not Spark

A Guardian blind date between Mike and Caterina was enjoyable but lacked romantic chemistry, with both participants giving high marks for conversation.

A Guardian blind date between Mike and Caterina was enjoyable but lacked romantic chemistry, with both participants...

Mike, from Cambridge, and Caterina, from London, met for a blind date at Tagine & Grill at the Sun and 13 Cantons in London. The evening scored a 9.5 from Mike and a 7.5 from Caterina, ending with a farewell hug rather than a kiss.

Mike's Perspective

Mike found Caterina warm, confident, and easy to talk to. He said she was genuinely one of the easiest people to talk to that he had ever met. Their conversation covered topics like being an aunt or uncle, freelance life, and jury duty. Mike noted no awkward moments and praised her table manners, saying any faux pas went unnoticed because he was enjoying the conversation.

Caterina's Perspective

Caterina's first impression of Mike was of a nice smile and a face that seemed a bit nervous or shy. She appreciated that he would pour water in her glass whenever it was empty. She felt she led the conversation most of the time, asking questions, which she cited as the most awkward moment. Her best thing about Mike was that he seemed to love putting care into what he does and says, calling him a rare find these days.

The Post-Date Stroll

Mike and Caterina were the last two in the restaurant, so they went for a walk around Soho and Covent Garden until midnight. Caterina said she felt Mike deserved a bit of tourism coming from Cambridge. Mike had to dash for the last train back home, and said he would have liked more time before the train forced the evening to end.

Assessing the Connection

Both participants described each other with the word kind. Mike used the words warm, kind, and elegant for Caterina. Caterina described Mike as organised, thorough, and kind. She also described herself as a weird woman who eats fast and laughs loudly.

Plans for the Future

Neither ruled out meeting again, but framed it platonically. Mike said he would like to grab a coffee together and would introduce Caterina to his friends without hesitation. Caterina said Mike had a lot of energy.

The date was organised by The Guardian's Blind Date column.
