Lost number text reconnects couple for lasting relationship
A woman who lost a man's number after a chance meeting later received his text just as she was deactivating her old phone, leading to a long-distance

In 2002, a woman going through a breakup met a man named Matt in a Portsmouth nightclub, only to lose his contact details immediately afterward. She reconnected with him months later when his text arrived seconds before she permanently switched off her old phone number.
A chance meeting and immediate loss
After a messy split, the author's friend took her to a Portsmouth club called Route 66. There, she spotted Matt, a local she described as a blond, tanned, windsurfing Ryan Phillippe lookalike. They spent the night dancing together and later shared toast and Marmite at a friend's flat, which she saw as a promising sign.
The next morning, the pair swapped numbers at a cafe before she returned to her home in Sheffield. She told him of her plans to resign and relocate to the south coast after finalizing her breakup. "He said he’d wait for me to get in touch because he knew I had a lot going on," she wrote. Later that day, she discovered his number had not saved in her phone.
Moving on and a fateful ping
She tried to find him on subsequent visits to Portsmouth but failed. Back in Sheffield, her plans changed when a manager left her job. Her employer offered a promotion and pay rise to stay, which she accepted. As part of her fresh start, she ordered a new phone.
While transferring her data to the new device, she was about to deactivate the old one for good. At that exact moment, a text message arrived. It read: “Hi Karen, I just wondered if you ever moved down in the end? If so, would love to meet up. Matt. X”
Building a long-distance bond
She responded instantly, and he called immediately to arrange a day trip to Brighton. This began a period of intense communication and weekend visits across the country. The author reflected that losing the number initially was perfectly timed, as accepting the promotion allowed her to establish independence and heal from her previous relationship.
She noted the narrow margin of the reconnection: "If Matt’s text had arrived five minutes later, I would have switched off my old phone and missed it."
A life built together
They maintained a long-distance relationship for a year before she moved south to be with him. By then, the move felt like running toward a new life rather than away from an old one.
That time has included a wedding, a round-the-world backpacking trip, three children, and a permanent move to Australia. She jokes that his look has evolved from Ryan Phillippe to resemble actor Travis Fimmel, aided by glasses she chose. While her nightclub days are over, she states she would still choose him if she saw him on a dancefloor today.
