E-scooter crashes can cause serious head injuries, damage to internal organs, and complex fractures, even if the fall appears to be minor. Trauma surgeons are seeing injuries that are more severe than expected, given the relatively modest speeds of e-scooters.

Understanding the Risks of E-Scooter Crashes

A study examined over 15,000 people with moderate or severe injuries, including 580 e-scooter riders, more than 7,000 motorcyclists, and more than 7,000 cyclists. The results showed that traumatic brain injuries were around three and a half times as common among e-scooter riders as among motorcyclists, and around 1.7 times more common than in cyclists.

The pattern of injuries sustained on an e-scooter is different from those sustained on motorcycles or bicycles. Head and internal injuries make up a much greater proportion of the resulting trauma. Factors Contributing to E-Scooter Injuries

One explanation for this injury pattern lies in how e-scooters are designed and ridden. Riders stand upright, giving them a relatively high centre of gravity, and their wheels are much smaller than those on most bicycles. This makes them more susceptible to sudden stops and loss of control.

Helmet use is particularly important for e-scooter riders, yet only about 6% of seriously injured e-scooter riders in the study were recorded as wearing helmets. Children also featured disproportionately, with around 16% of injured e-scooter riders being under 18.

Preventing and Treating E-Scooter Injuries

Treatment for e-scooter injuries depends on the severity of the damage. Minor fractures may need a cast or brace, while more complicated fractures can require surgery. Serious head injuries may need intensive care, brain surgery, or prolonged rehabilitation.

Many of the factors contributing to these injuries can be reduced. Riders should wear helmets, become familiar with the acceleration, braking, and steering of the e-scooter, and avoid distractions such as using a phone or carrying another passenger. By taking these precautions, riders can minimize their risk of injury and enjoy the convenience and benefits of e-scooters.
