## The Risks of Unreflective AI Use

Generative AI programs can assist students by providing explanations, brainstorming ideas, or solving complex problems. However, when students adopt these tools without verifying or understanding the outputs, their academic skills suffer. Researchers Hui Zhao and Huijuan Gu from Zhoukou Normal University define this behavior as *thoughtless use*-a pattern where students blindly accept AI-generated content without reflection.

The study focused on self-directed learning, a key skill in higher education that involves setting goals, applying study strategies, and monitoring progress. Zhao and Gu examined how thoughtless AI use affects two psychological factors: **self-efficacy** (belief in one’s ability to succeed) and **learning motivation** (the drive to engage with coursework).

## Survey Findings and Gender Differences

The researchers surveyed 487 undergraduate students from four universities in Henan Province, China. The participants, representing various academic disciplines, answered questions about their AI habits, self-efficacy, motivation, and self-directed learning.

Gender differences emerged in the study. For male students, thoughtless AI use had a stronger negative impact on learning motivation, possibly because they often view AI as a tool for efficiency. For female students, the habit was more strongly associated with declines in self-efficacy and self-directed learning, as they typically rely on reflective study strategies.

## Limitations and Future Research

The study’s cross-sectional design limits causal conclusions, as it only captures a single point in time. Additionally, the sample was predominantly female (80%) and drawn from one Chinese province, raising questions about generalizability. Future research could explore intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation and track students over a semester to observe long-term effects.
